Fall is the Best Time….
…to marvel at the turning leaves and harvest your edibles but to also do essential work in your garden such as planting bulbs, grass seeding and lawn aeration. Falls moderate temperatures offer an optimal window to plant grass seed, bulbs, evergreen plants and many other species for healthy germination before the onset of winter dormancy.
Also critical to your lawns health and plant root development is aeration as it provides more oxygen to root systems while expelling trapped gases.
So when spring arrives next year your curb appeal and gardens health will already be evident while most people are just beginning the garden enhancement process.
Take advantage of this season and let Green Gardeners help you prepare with fall planting, aeration, seeding and of course, a fall clean up.

Compost Tea
As the name implies, compost tea is made by steeping compost in water. It’s used as either a foliar spray or a soil drench, depending on where your plant has problems. Why go to the extra trouble of brewing, straining, and spraying a tea rather than just working compost into the soil? There are several reasons. First, compost tea makes the benefits of compost go farther. What’s more, when sprayed on the leaves, compost tea helps suppress foliar diseases, increases the amount of nutrients available to the plant, and speeds the breakdown of toxins. Using compost tea has even been shown to increase the nutritional quality and improve the flavor of vegetables.
How to make Compost Tea:
- First start with good compost, you can use your own home-made compost, buy compost from your local garden supply store or use worm castings.
- In a 5 gallon bucket use 1 quart of compost
- Use an aquarium pump to aerate (not necessary but very helpful)
- Add molasses to increase bacterial activity (good for grasses)
- Add liquid seaweed and/or fish emulsion to increase fungal activity (good for woody plants and shrubs)
- Let steep for 24 hours and then strain.
- This mixture is safe enough to apply to any part of your garden.
We can apply compost tea that we’ve made same / next day from being bubbled. Order now
Happy steeping!
Also, we would be happy to include a compost tea capacity building option with your fall makeover special.

Book your Spring Garden Clean Up
Mid-Winter Musings
With the recent thaw that has happened, people are starting to think about prospects for a new gardening season. One thing interesting being a gardener is to feel the first hint of Spring each year. This year I sensed it on Groundhog Day. Although it was reported that the Groundhog saw his shadow this year, it felt to me that this will be an early Spring. Is it because I am well rested and ready for the Spring already? Wishful thinking? Perhaps.
We are starting to book our clean ups and jobs for the upcoming year. As with most gardeners and landscapers time/capacity fills up at some point. If you would like to contact us while there is ample time to discuss gardening for 2009, feel free
Landscaper Training on Stormwater * Press Release *
Toronto, Canada – February 2, 2009
RiverSides and Green Gardeners Community Collaborative Inc. are pleased to announce a workshop for green landscapers and those who are interested in greening their services. The workshop will benefit Toronto’s watersheds and introduce contractors and businesses to ideas about how to compete in a greener and more cost-conscious marketplace. It will help to build understanding of the benefits of linking environmental issues to client solutions for home and garden.
Join us on February 19, 2009 at Northern District Library, 40 Orchardview Blvd Room 200 from 1 to 4.30pm.
The landscape industry is rapidly evolving as larger ecological concerns become more pressing and the regulatory environment shifts. New certifications are becoming available for organic landscapers, and key indicators and ratings systems like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) are setting the bar for meeting and exceeding regulatory requirements. A key component of all certification/rating systems includes onsite management of water – pollution and run-off prevention, site stewardship and ecological practices that contribute to improved urban water conditions.
At the workshop landscape contractors will learn how to add value for clients through rain and water saving programs. Case studies and hands on demos will introduce cutting edge developments in on-site management of stormwater, including rain/bog gardens, rain barrels, rainwater harvesting and other solutions. This is especially relevant in light of the City of Toronto’s 2007 downspout disconnection by-law which requires all Toronto’s residents to disconnect their downspouts from the sewer system. Homeowners in the combined sewer area of Toronto will be responsible for managing stormwater on their properties using rain barrels and/or other landscape solutions.
Participants will have a chance to network with Each participant will receive an information and resource kit to take home.
